Cat Behavior Problems: Housesoiling
Inappropriate elimination-That’s a nice way of saying it, but lets face reality…..The cat is urinating all over the house!
The two big questions I always here from my clients are Why do they do it? And How am I going to deal with this?
The fact is that we don’t know why they do it. We don’t really know why they do anything. The best guess is that it’s a stress behavior. Now ask yourself what your cat has to be stressed about. He doesn’t have a job or pay bills. He doesn’t even have to deal with in-laws.
However, there are all sorts of stresses on you cat:
-Any objects out of place. Especially clothes on the floor.
-Any change in the litter box. Box itself, positioning, cleaner.
-Any change in the environment
-Any new people or new pets coming into the house
-Any move. This disrupts his entire world.
As you can probably tell by now you are going to have to change some of your behaviors in order to alter your cat’s bad behavior. Don’t worry you can do it.
Dr. Elsey’s Cat Attract Litter products can really help. These are cat litters and litter additives that will help draw your pet’s attention back to the cat box. You can order these products at PetSmart.com.
There are medical solutions as well. Products like home diffusers that emit pheromones into the room may help. These products also come in sprays that can be applied directly to the area where your cat is urinating.
If your cat is still stubborn enough to keep “inappropriately eliminating” , then discuss drug therapies with your veterinarian. Drugs like diazepam, buspirone, clomipramine, amitriptyline and fluoxetine have all been use to treat anxieties in cats.
Most importantly….be patient and never yell at your cat. Punishment will only make your cat’s stress behavior worse!
